the freelance flaw

Freelancer:

A person who contends in a cause or in a succession of various causes, as he or she chooses, without personal attachment or allegiance.

I like that. It sounds like freedom right? And it is! For most. Some choose to think of it as a burden. I see it as an opportunity. A way to go out and do a project that I believe in. But there are some definite drawbacks to jumping out there without a net.

Pros:

MONEY PAID FOR TIME WORKED I get paid for my ideas, not how long it takes me to put them together (but you know, that too.) I make more money on short projects than I did even at my highest paying hourly job and still have time to go sing karaoke most nights.

FLEXIBILITY I am able to help out around the house/my friends and still make money. I also get to do cool things like trips to California and taking a break with out having to ask anyone’s permission to do so. I work hard, and I play hard. Nothing will stop me when I want a project or an adventure.

TRAINING I get to train at my own pace. I don’t have “required learning” and I can research what I believe is best to further my career. I also can get paid to train when people are willing to take a chance and work with someone who may not be fully experienced at a lesser rate. It works on both ends.

Cons:

SECURITY What can hurt the most is not having a 401k benefit set-up or any insurance behind you. It can be really scarey! Luckily there are places like the Freelancers Union that can help with thing like finding the right insurance to even giving Membership Discounts (on things you need like phone, internet, and car insurance.) The rub: it’s totally free to sign up. Good deal.

FINDING THE NEXT GIG Sometimes you’re so busy you can’t get any sleep and your friends think you died in your apartment. Other times you are so bored you write wordpress blogs (ahem…) With faith-and savings-come the next step. Even it feels like forever until the next one.

IT’S ALL FUN AND GAMES UNTIL you only get one hour of sleep at a time before you are woken up by your alarm making waiting for your client to send you the next piece of info so you can make deadline. Deadlines are essential when you work for yourself. You don’t hit ’em, you don’t get paid. Simple as that.

In the end it’s all about dedication. Some people feel better having everything set-up for them, while other don’t trust the system and love vacations. Reminds me of something….

Empire

I obviously have too much time on my hands. Anyone have any clients they wanna send me?
